A message from the President…

Please take the time to look around to see who we are and how we serve our community. Hopefully you will discover that you would like to be a part of what we do and will want to join us. Leave your comments below.

It will be a pleasure and an honor to serve as SIEG’s first co-presidents this year. Sherry McLellan and I have spent a great deal of time discussing our goals for this year and are anxious to share them with you at our Retreat. We have ideas for new and exciting programs that will be unique to SIEG. We are hopeful that you will be open-minded about possible new challenges and opportunities that will give SIEG more visibility, credibility and notoriety in our community, while advancing our mission of empowering women and girls. With the input of the many committed, amazing and talented women in our Club, we have no doubt that 2019-20 will be the year that we Dream More, Learn More, Do More, Become More!

Sharon Renzo
Co-President

Welcome to the Soroptimist International of Elk Grove Website.

As part of our mission to assist women and girls’ economic empowerment through education, we award a yearly scholarship. We provide two high school girls with a $1,000 scholarship through the Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation. Our SIEG “Live Your Dream Award” is given to assist women annually who provide the primary source of financial support for their families.

Our newest global program is Dream it, Be It: Career Support for Girls.” Dream it Be It focuses on girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their future success. We are still in the planning stages of how our club will embrace this program. The idea is “…to provide girls with access to professional role models, career education and the resources to live their dreams.

All of our awards, and the programs we support, are financed through fundraisers that club members arrange. Our two major fundraisers are our See’s Candies Store and Holiday Boutique and Martinis & Merriment. (We may have met you there!)  We have been doing the See’s fundraiser for over 30 years and it takes a village – or at least all of our members. We will open it December 1st, although much time is spent in the previous weeks getting our Store ready. This entails decorating the Christmas trees and walls, putting together the shelves and stocking the delicious See’s Candy! It is located on the east side of Highway 99 on Elk Grove Blvd. Some members start shopping in August to get the items we stock in our Holiday Boutique.  And, it takes all members to pitch in and sign up for 4-5 of the 4 hours shifts while our Store is open.  Our Martinis & Merriment event is held in March. Come enjoy the live music, comedians, the mini-martinis and small bites provided by local restaurants, a raffle and silent auction. We also hold a one-day Bunco fundraiser in the fall.

Programs that we support include the Elk Grove Food Bank, H.A.R.T, St. John’s Shelter, WEAVE, Chicks in Crisis, Wellspring Women’s Center, See’s for Soldiers, and My Sister’s House, to name a few. Throughout the year we give in-kind support to many organizations for their efforts as well.

Soroptimist International (SI) has consultative status with the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council, which oversees U.N. activities and policies promoting human rights. It is in this forum that Soroptimist representatives can advocate for the Soroptimist mission of improving the lives of women and girls. Our past efforts have been, in conjunction with other SI clubs, to purchase solar cookers for women of Darfur, Sudan.

Just a quick thank you to one of your members. I sat with you on the plane yesterday as you came back from Florida. Thank you for the wonderful conversation and body lotion! I used it today before my friend’s wedding. I will absolutely, as promised, share your organization with my friends that live in this area. I sincerely hope they decide to become involved. You are an inspiration!

    Best wishes,
You friendly, neighborhood oncology nurse from North Carolina.

Lori: You should have received a direct response from Genny Fulp, the Soroptimist that you sat with on the trip. I am so happy that you and Genny hit it off so well.

Charline: You should have received a response from Tracey a few minutes ago. I am sure that you will enjoy being a part of the Soroptimist International of Elk Grove. I had a nice visit with your husband at the Lions meeting on Monday. (Jack Edwards, Elk Grove Lions, but also the webmaster for the Soroptimist.)

My 7 year old daughter is in a competitive dance team with Elite Studio of Dance in Elk Grove. We are looking for opportunities for the team to practice before their first competition on November 10th. Would the soroptimist members be interested in a performance at one of their upcoming meetings? They only have one song to perform so it would be short. Thank you for your consideration.

How fun! But I don’t think that either the timing or meeting location will work. Our first meeting of our Club is September 7 at 7:30am. We hold our morning meetings at Elk Grove Presbyterian Church. There really isn’t any room for a performance. And, our night time meeting location is a conference room in a local medical building. But, we wish you and the girls well!
